Reading & Writing Heroes
Children in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) experience a personalised pace of learning, where tasks and support is tailored to each individual. Children learn in different ways and at different speeds. You'll know when your child is ready for each stage of development.
After much parent/preschool liaison, we know this page will provide the essentials in supporting your child at home; facilitating an amazing start to their school reading and writing journey.
We have published video guides, links and useful documents to guide you through the learning in EYFS and beyond. Help us, to help your child, become a "Reading and Writing Hero."
We look forward to working with you all, ensuring we all use the same knowledge and teaching strategies at home and at school.
As always, thank you for your support, together we will give your child/ren the BEST possible school career.

We teach synthetic phonics (pure sounds). We do not add 'uh' to the end of letters. This enables children to blend more effectively. The first two videos demonstrate how we pronounce the letter sounds, digraphs (two letters which make one sound) and trigraphs (three letters one sound). The third video explains and demonstrates blending.
We hope you find the videos helpful.
We follow our own scheme "Handwriting Heroes."
At South End Infants the development of early writing includes the following 5 principles:
- Correct lower case formation. See image gallery.
- Good posture/sitting position (at a table).
- Correct pencil grip (tripod). See image gallery.
- Pride in our own work (always).
The children then carry these skills forward throughout school life.
Digraphs and Trigraphs
We learn to write in lower case. We only use capital letters at the beginning of our names, place names or as sentence starters. Download the PDF version of this booklet for a closer look.
Thank you ' Plan A Consultants Ltd' for sponsoring our Reading Bears. We love reading to our furry friends.
